When designing the database layer for MSC, we used PostgreSQL 17 but faced a dilemma with our Object-Relational Mapper (ORM). We chose Prisma exclusively for schema management and automatic migrations. However, we intentionally avoided using the Prisma Client at runtime due to its known 50-100ms startup overhead, which bloats the bundle and consumes excessive memory. Instead, we adopted Kysely as our type-safe SQL query builder. By using `kysely-codegen`, we automatically generated TypeScript types directly from the Postgres database. This hybrid approach allowed us to write programmatic, highly optimized SQL queries with full compile-time type validation, keeping the developer experience excellent without paying the heavy runtime penalty of a traditional ORM.
